Description
Mr. Fiskers is an action-oriented strategy game. It mixes the meticulous planning of a lane defense game with the fast-paced action of a realtime strategy game.
The player must use gadgets and tools to manage their army, interact with the level, and deal with enemies. Gadgets allow the player to do things like: repair golems, interrupt enemy spellcasters, teleport golems and enemies around the map, activate special items on each level, assign control groups, mark high-priority targets, and hurt/debilitate enemies.
Golems also have unique combat abilities that can be manually activated on the battlefield. Some of these abilities let you deal damage in fun ways, like taking manual control of a golem's rotary guns, or over-exposing a golem's laser aperture. Other abilities serve utilitarian purposes, like quickly repositioning golems in the middle of a firefight, temporarily encasing a golem in impenetrable stone, or siphoning one golem's energy into another golem.
Frequent boss encounters will challenge the player's multitasking and focus. These bosses use tactics similar to raid bosses in online RPGs, like summoning adds that need to be focused down, casting spells that need to be interrupted, or using tactics that require strategic positioning and quick reaction times.
The game will be available for PC and Mac, and may be ported to tablets after release.
If the game meets its funding goal on Kickstarter (campaign starts May 5, 2014), it is expected to be released in Q1 2015. A head-to-head multiplayer battle mode is one of the project's stretch goals.
A playable demo is available on the kickstarter page. It contains the first 5 missions, the first 6 golems, and the first 3 gadgets. It uses low-resolution placeholder art and music, which will be replaced with new artwork and music if the game is funded.
The final game will feature about 30 golems, 15 gadgets, and 35 missions / boss fights.
History
Development HistoryJustin and JP started building games together in 2010 after meeting on FGL, a community for Flash game developers and sponsors.
They started Mr. Fiskers as a side project in April 2012. They worked on the game in their spare time until a demo was ready in August 2012.
After finishing the demo, Justin and JP decided to delay development on Mr. Fiskers for two reasons: they wanted to participate in PlayerIO's Epic Flash Game contest, and they didn't want to compete for attention with PopCap's recently-announced game Plants vs Zombies 2, which had features very similar to ones that Mr. Fiskers was already using, like time travel and on-the-field special abilities.
Justin and JP won first place in the PlayerIO contest with their multiplayer racing game, Dillo Hills 2, which went on to win 5 FGL Ninja Awards and was one of Kongregates Top 10 Games of 2013. They continued to provide support and free content updates for the game throughout 2013.
Once they were satisfied with the state of Dillo Hills 2, they decided to return to Mr. Fiskers and seek funding to turn it from a demo into a full game.
